Sears & Roebuck House

March 8, 2012 by Molinda Goforth Leave a Comment

I was so disappointed last night when the lady who had invited me to see the Sears Catalog house called and asked if we could postpone the visit.

It is close to dark when I get in from my “job” but I will try to go by and get a picture of the outside. I can’t wait to learn the history.  I think I understood that the man who ordered the kit is still living and perhaps I can get an interview with him  Maybe I am dreaming.  I will keep you posted.  In the meantime…..

House to Really Go See!

March 7, 2012 by Molinda Goforth 1 Comment

Tonight I will be visiting at the house that was ordered from Sears & Roebuck!

I have so many questions.  When was the house built?  It is close to the beach and I know it survived a tsunami as the water came down town, 3 blocks beyond where this house sits.

I have been told there is not any insulation in the house.  The winds are frigid here.  Alright, I will stop speculating and report to you with facts and pictures tonight.

Discovery..Sears & Roebuck Mailorder House

March 6, 2012 by Molinda Goforth 1 Comment

Yesterday,  I discovered there is a house here in Seaside that was ordered from Sears when they were doing the mail order houses!  Amazing!

Wednesday evening, I have the opportunity to visit.  I am eager to share more details.

I shared with you a few days ago about the Sears and Roebuck homes.  It was exciting for me to “discover” them, like finding a hidden diamond.

The path to this house was revealed when I visited  a gift shop here that has intrigued me for a bit.  So, I went in to find something unique for my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter.  A beautiful lady assisted me in finding some awesome gifts.  She is an artist who recently moved to Seaside from California.  She commented,  was when I first moved to Seaside, ” I lived in a house that was ordered from Sears & Roebuck!”

There is a story here!  Stay tuned to hear all about it.

Sears & Roebuck Mailorder Homes

From 1908 until 1940 Sears offered 370 models of homes to choose from.  One was a bungalow called “the Osborn”

You could follow the instructions found in a 75 page book and assemble more   than 29,000 pieces in 90 days.  Homes cost from $500.00.

Recap:  This is my role model – to provide a book of instructions to build your own little house and Live big. Soon this resource will be offered.

Now,  onward to continue our house hunt.  Are we having fun?

Next Stop, a Home for 32,000

February 1, 2012 by Molinda Goforth 1 Comment

Next stop is from the New York Times showcasing a lady in Seattle Washington who made the most of her circumstance.

It is a charming love story, full of wit and good judgement.  The conversion cost 32,000.00

While building from scratch and purchasing land would have been more, it reflects how resourceful we can be if we analyze the situation and make present assets “pay” their dues!

Read all about her story here  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/22/garden/22garage.html?8dpc.

Noticing the date you can confirm the idea of downsizing and living large in a little home is not new and people are enjoying this freedom.  Why not you?

Calling A Closet Home

January 19, 2012 by Molinda Goforth 2 Comments

Greeted yesterday with a Hurricane warning for our area.

This greeting brought to the surface of my dream that a conventional home definitely anchored to a foundation is more to my liking!

So, it’s time to check out the market stores for conventional little houses.

How about this one?http://realestate.msn.com/blogs/listedblogpost.aspx?post=0a365da2-70d4-40c8-8723-107e7523bb48&gt1=35013 Could you live in 78 square feet?  It is an apartment in New York and the cost is $800.00 per month for rent.

Eight Hundred Dollars each month would be a big investement toward the completion of a little house with big features.  This apartment definitely goes in our shopping cart for future comparison for living large in  a little space for little money.

With each house in my shopping  cart, we will  look at the yearly investment for the cost of living in that space.  We will also check out the location, common income and some other considerations. This one is earmarked for budget day in my book!

On budget days we will go through the cart and apply all good things to the little house.

Recreational Vehicles/Converted Bus

Still on the off the grid shopping mode? To browse through lots of pictures and ideas, check out Jay Shaffer’s tiny house movement.

In my opinion, another similar housing solution to the off the grid is RV living.  Remember at the beginning of this blog, I tried a 5th wheeler and actually enjoyed it for a brief life.

I am just too spoiled with nice bathrooms and high ceilings to want to live permanently in a 5th wheeler or an RV.

The high end Recreational Vehicle will cost more than my little house.  On the luxury end of the RV spectrum though, there is freedom in driving your house from place to place  I wish to plead the 5th for permanent refusal of the RV movement and save a little one for my vacation pleasures.

I am amazed with the conversion of this bus and if I had someone in my life with the skills to renovate one just like this I would want it!

Fourth Of July, Celebration

July 4, 2011 by Molinda Goforth 2 Comments

I greet this day with love in my heart.

The Fourth is an extra special  day, as it is significant of independence and freedom!

In America we have freedom to worship, freedom to speak and freedom to dream.   Freedom applies as an individual word that blends with love.  How do you choose your freedom?

Today, I am reminded, I have a choice regarding where I live.  For today, I am happy to be in Seaside, Oregon.

My dream includes a future move back to the South and a shift in my lifestyle living.

Enjoy this day!

Until next time,

Molinda

Merry Christmas

December 9, 2010 by Molinda Goforth Leave a Comment

I wish you a merry Christmas, I wish you a Merry Christmas I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

What  would it take to make you Merry and Happy this Christmas?

It seems the the broadcast is as follows:  We, the news reporters, interrupt your life with the following Bulletin:

Here comes slew foot here comes slew foot right down slew foot lane, He’s got a bag and it’s filled with sorrow to mess with your mind again…..

Bills are a past due, Gifts are worrying you,  What a pitiful site…..  Collectors saying  Yes you are Paying,    Old Slew foot comes tonight.

Don’t let the cares of this world mess with your Christmas.  This is the Celebration for the Birth of Christ.  Renew your mind with happy memories.  Cherish your family and loved ones.

My heart is filled with wonderful memories of my Mom and Dad….lots of food and company, always gifts for those not as fortunate as we were.  My mother would go to the orphanage and take clothes, powder and cosmetics  for 3 girls there.  Then, she would bring one of the girls  home for the Holidays.

Trips to Grandma Asher’s home, where the fireplace crackled with the wood fire, and chestnuts roasting in a iron pot…..my Aunt Martha backed up to the heat in her worn blue jeans that I so envied.

On to Aunt Josies house for Chicken and dumplings……Josie killed the hen, dressed it and cooked it.  Next to my Uncle Kells (who was really my biological dad, and hear the gross stories of how he slaughtered the hog)……….fresh pork for breakfast and sides of ham to go in the smoke house.

We had a Hobo,  who we all called Uncle Steve.  He came every Christmas and slept on a cot in the Smoke House.  Christmas day he joined us at the Dinner Table.  I met a man in Astoria who reminds me of Uncle Steve.  Uncle Steve rode the trains and ironically also left this planet when one ran over him.

Twas the night before Christmas and a Caroling we did go………..Actually, there was Caroling the week before Christmas.  It was sweet to hear the sernade of the Carolers outside.

My favorite guest….Uncle TJ would arrive with laughter, jokes and an appetite for hot peppers………………..

I am not sure I created enough wonderful family memories for my sons.  I pray they will create special memories this year.  By the Grace of God I intend to share love joy and peace this Season…..these items are free.

I am thankful for my sons, Ray Mark and Kris, daughter in laws, Lynne, Sophia, Christiana and Grand children  Sean, Soleil and Eliana.

I am thankful for my health, for the friends and family I have on earth and those gone on who enriched my life.

I am Thankful that I believe that Jesus came to create his Kingdom here on earth, that I have accepted Him as my Christ and Saviour and Celebrate His Birth and Eternal Life during this Season.

Peace and Joy unto you…..Enjoy this season and take it with you for the coming year.  Bake a pan of cookies and give them away!

This has been a year of extreme change for me.  Change is good.

Now, I am like Secretariat and plan to cross that finish line!

Peace and Joy,

Molinda

Yo-Yo Effect

September 10, 2010 by Molinda Goforth 5 Comments

When my boys were little they loved to play with a yo-yo.   It went down, bounced back, they could yo-yo to each side and finally up in the air.

The yo-yo returned to the point of beginning.

My weight has been like that.  From where I started in January, I have lost, regained, lost to the previous point, regained, now I am at that previous point again.
Today, I am disgusted with the results of the scale.  What should I do to be proactive?

Recently, I applied the law of renewing my mind to driving across a mountain pass.
I said Mind:

  • delete the message that I don’t like to drive across the pass,
  • insert  I have done this a million times ( I haven’t)
  • also, mind, I LOVE to drive the pass.  Well, hmmmmmmmmm,
  • I drove to Boise and crossed the pass with no problem.

Now, I am declaring a renewing of my mind to allow my appetite to return to the normal thus allowing my weight to follow.

Me, myself and I are doing well eating Vegan food.  My son, Kris is a participant.

Come along with me,

Molinda
